Virtual power plants: five growing areas of recruitment demand

UB hunter Editorial TeamIndustry news

A renewable-energy company's customer used to ask how much electricity a project could generate or store. Increasingly, the question is how distributed generation, batteries and flexible demand can be aggregated to participate in electricity markets. That shift creates work across technology, products, resource operations and trading.

A virtual power plant, or VPP, coordinates those distributed resources so they can contribute to system operation and market activity as an aggregated portfolio.

Scale and workforce expectations

Guidance from the National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration targets more than 20 GW of VPP regulation capability by 2027 and more than 50 GW by 2030. For a sense of scale, 20 GW is comparable to the regulation capability of 20 large thermal power plants, although the operating characteristics differ.

The associated workforce could reach hundreds of thousands. Material accompanying the Ministry of Education's 2026 undergraduate programme catalogue, including transport-energy integration engineering and VPP applications, forecasts a shortage of more than 100,000 people over five years. That forecast concerns the gap in supply, rather than total employment.

Industry analysis cited through Xinhua's regional news network highlights the overlap between storage, Electricity Trading and VPPs. Demand extends beyond traders to platform products, system development, aggregation, forecasting, analytics, operations and business development.

1. Algorithm engineers

Algorithm roles cover load, renewable-output and electricity-price forecasting; energy optimisation; demand-response strategies; and coordinated control.

A listing published through Shanghai University of Electric Power includes cleaning time-series data from solar, storage and loads, feature engineering, training and tuning prediction models, and implementing parts of an energy-optimisation model. GoodWe's BOSS Zhipin listing extends to resource aggregation, flexibility assessment, dispatch control, frequency-regulation algorithms, market declarations, price forecasts and arbitrage strategies for Retailers, grid-side storage and VPPs.

A May 2026 Didi listing for a senior electricity-trading strategy algorithm expert describes optimising long-term contracts, spot bidding curves, combined ancillary-service and spot participation, and storage/VPP aggregation. It calls for multi-objective models balancing revenue, risk and deviation penalties, using approaches such as operations research and reinforcement learning.

Examples include a BOSS Zhipin power-algorithm position at RMB 20,000–40,000 per month with 15 salary payments, and a Chuneng New Energy electricity-market/VPP EMS engineer listing at RMB 15,000–30,000 per month. These advertised examples do not establish an overall market average.

2. Product managers

A VPP product manager translates market and customer needs into a usable system and a credible commercial proposition. State Power Rixin's cited 2026 campus campaign planned to recruit 10 VPP product managers. Duties included interpreting policy, researching users and markets, writing requirements, validating development results, and preparing solutions, research-project applications and presentation materials.

Mingyang's smart-energy product role similarly covers research, prototypes and the product lifecycle, coordinating R&D and operations. A VPP product-manager listing from the Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University is cited at RMB 16,000–25,000 per month.

The capability combines electricity-market logic, software product design and clear customer communication. A general internet-product background does not automatically supply the necessary power-sector understanding; engineering experience alone may not supply product-management skills.

3. R&D engineers

Where algorithm engineers focus on models, broader R&D engineers build the system around them. A 2026 Chongqing Machinery and Electronics Holding recruitment example spans VPP planning and architecture, forecasting, price arbitrage, optimal dispatch, peak shaving, demand response and cluster control.

It also includes economic dispatch, peak and frequency regulation, research into spot, ancillary-service, demand-response and capacity-market rules, interfaces to grid dispatch and power exchanges, and energy-management platform development. The breadth approaches a full-stack specification. Employers should make clear which areas the individual must own and where other specialists provide support.

4. Operations specialists and development managers

Once a platform exists, people must aggregate resources, maintain customer relationships, execute transactions and turn capability into revenue.

A 2026 Hubei New Energy VPP development-manager listing includes business strategy and Team Building, market research, presales advice, planning, solution discussions, requirements analysis, competitor research and tenders. It also asks for load and spot-price forecasting, trading strategies, backtesting and performance reviews. A JA Solar Energy Technology VPP operations listing is cited at RMB 20,000–35,000 per month with 13 salary payments.

These roles require working relationships with customers, grid organisations and trading centres alongside commercial and operational judgement. Their defining output is a functioning, economically useful resource portfolio.

5. Combined trading and VPP roles

Examples include a Sichuan hydropower investment group's 2026 trader role that explicitly includes VPPs, renewable-electricity sales and spot trading. Mingyang's electricity-trading engineer role covers medium- and long-term and spot strategies, purchasing and risk management, supported by load forecasting and price analysis.

As the activities converge, an understanding of aggregation and resource constraints becomes increasingly relevant to traders. Employers still need to define whether a vacancy primarily owns strategy, execution or resource operations.

Hire for the relevant combination

China Research and Intelligence's industry analysis describes VPPs as a multidisciplinary field. Four capability groups recur: power-system and market fundamentals; algorithms and time-series data; software engineering, including cloud platforms, microservices and databases; and commercial understanding.

No single educational background reliably covers them all. Electrical engineers may need programming and modelling experience; computing graduates need power-system and market knowledge; finance graduates need stronger technical and industry grounding.

UB hunter therefore begins with the immediate problem: forecasting, trading strategy, platform development or aggregation operations. A focused definition makes it easier to identify transferable experience and avoids asking every applicant to master the entire VPP business.
